Broadband Internet Access

Technologies Used For Broadband Internet Access

Broadband Internet access is a high-speed Internet access service, similar to dial up networks over modem, but much more advance than the dial up networks. Broadband Internet access does not require the help of a telephone line system for making the connection. They are also much faster to connect than the dial up networks.

Broadband speeds are defined in terms of downloading speeds. Broadband is responsible for high rate data transmissions also. They can transmit data at a rate of 2 Mega bits per second.

The standard broadband technologies are DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and Cable Modem technology, while the newer technologies include ADSL, VDSL and so on. These advance forms of broadband services use fiber optics technology for making the connections. Fiber optics technology makes transmission of data over longer distances easier and is more cost effective than copper wire technology.

The various technologies used for Broadband Internet Access are as below:

* Multi-linking Modem Technology: It is a technology that almost doubles the capability of broadband as compared to dial-ups. It requires a special software at user's end, two dial-up accounts, two telephone lines, two modems and ISP supports for multi-linking.

* Dual analog Line Technology: Dual analog lines are used to attain a speed of 90 kilo bits per second. ISP has to support the technology by supporting line bonding to serve the purpose.

* Integrated Service Digital Network: Integrated Service Digital Network or ISDN is a high-speed access method to get connected to the net. The accessing speed that could be attainable by the use of two or more ISDN lines bonded together is as high as 256 kilo bits per second. This bonding ability also enables video conferencing and speedy transmission of data.

* T-1/DS-1 Technology: These are technologies that are highly expensive and are managed by Public Service Commissions in each state. These technologies offer guaranteed bandwidth speeds, good quality service. A T-1 technology can be aggregated with one or more T-1 technologies, thus increasing the bandwidths.

* Wired Ethernet Technology: This method of broadband connection to the Internet provides very fast Internet access facility. A 100 Mega bit per second Ethernet access speed will be available to a network, if the accessing speed of Internet is around four times the T-1 speed i.e 6 mega bits per second.

* Rural Broadband Service: It is an effort to make available the broadband services in the rural areas with low densities. It costs a lot to set equipments in these areas. But there are some solutions to solve this problem in rural places.

Thus Broadband Internet Access could be made by the use of various technologies and at various places too.
