Broadband Internet Speed
Factors Affecting Broadband Internet Speed
|
Broadband is an Internet access technology that is more advance than dial-up networks. The broadband Internet speed is much more than dial-up networks. The maximum data rates attainable with dial-ups is only 56 kbps, whereas it could be as high as 256 kilobits per second to 8 mbps or more in Broadband. Broadband uses fiber optics technology, which is more advanced than copper wire technology used for data transmission. It can take information to larger distances and in a much more cost effective way. Some of the standard broadband technologies are DSL and Cable Modems. Many other forms of DSL technologies are Multi-linking modems, ISDN, Satellite Internet, Wired Ethernet, Cellular Broadband and so on. The key benefit of all these technologies is the speed rates that are possible while using them. Both DSL and Cable modems offer high-speed capabilities. Cable Modems are a bit faster than DSL speed, as they have higher levels of bandwidth as compared to DSL. More is the bandwidth; higher is the rate at which the data travels from one destination to the other. Theoretically, a cable modem can offer 30 mega bits per second speed while DSL can offer just 10 mega bits per second. Though there are some more upgraded forms of DSL technologies in the market that offers the same data rate, which the cable technology offers. For example VDSL, which is an advancement of DSL and is capable of attaining 30 mega bits per second speed. But these speed rates are only theoretical. While in actual practice it is not possible to gain these speedy rates. This is so because the cable modem service speed slows down if many people are using the service simultaneously in our locality. The speed also slows down due to traffic congestions on the net. Both DSL and cable modem services use speed caps in order to limit their bandwidth for certain reasons. This also reduces the Broadband Internet speed. Also many home networks do not match with the Internet connection speed. This reduces the performance rate. Practically, the cable modem provides 1 mega bits per second to 6 mega bits per second bandwidth for downloads and 128 kbps to 768 kbps for up loads. As the factors have a lot of effect on the speed rates of these technologies, there are some considerations that have to be kept in account. A cable modem service shares the bandwidth commonly with the subscribers in our locality. So more the number of subscribers in the locality, slower is the speed. Speed of these technologies is also affected by any kind of technical difficulties faced by the service provider. Spyware programs working on our computer also affect the Broadband Internet speed. They may be consuming the bandwidth, thus lowering the speed. Router is an instrument that connects Internet connection to the computer. If these are not properly working, then naturally it will affect the speed rates. Slower wireless network connections and old computers are also the factors to be considered that lowers the speed attainable by these technologies. Thus, it is important to consider all of the above factors in case we do not want to lower the Broadband Internet speed and thus utilizing them the fullest. The above considerations not only apply to DSL and Cable modem technologies but they are also applicable to other Broadband Technologies. |
