Cable Internet
Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Cable Internet Connection
|
A cable modem is a technology that allows us to make Internet access by hooking up the computer to a cable television line. The access speed attainable over cable Internet connection is 1.5 Mbps. Cable modems are much faster than prevalent telephone modem that were capable of offering only 28 to 56 Kbps speed of access. Even the maximum data rate that ISDN service provides is only 128 Kbps. Cable modem's one end is connected to the cable outlet of the wall on one end and to the computer on the other end. The function of a modem is to modulate or demodulate the signals. But a cable modem is much more than a telephone modem. It could act externally or could be embedded inside the computer. The Cable modems that are connected to the coaxial cable line of the cable operator set their communication through the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) of the local area. The cable modems attached to the system can send or receive information only through this system. The cable modems provide an actual bandwidth of 2.5 Mbps for downloading from the Internet and 27 Mbps for uploading on the Internet. The subscriber mostly takes a cable modem as a service. Subscribers to Cable modem Internet connection are charged for this service on their monthly cable bill. The local cable operator is responsible for the quality of service that he is offering. This operator only installs the modem and manages the quality of service. An ISP provides the Internet connectivity to the connection while the local operator is accountable for technical support to the users. Speed of access is the key issue, while we select an Internet connection technology. A cable modem is a fast means of Internet connection. They are considered to be 100 times faster then there predecessors, the dial up connections. Cable modems can run at a speed of as fast as 5 million bits a second. But this estimation is only theoretical. In actual practice they are only 20 times faster than dial ups, which again is a big difference. The number of users accessing at the same time affects the speed of cable modem connections. This is so because in a cable modem Internet connection, all the cable operators of a locality share a common bandwidth. So more the number of users in a locality, slower is the speed of access. Speed also greatly reduces due to the network congestions. Still a cable Internet is one of the fastest means of Internet access. It is also convenient and makes consistent Internet connections. |
