Dsl Cable Internet

Getting A DSL Cable Internet Connection

DSL cable Internet is a type of Internet connection, which provides transmission of the digital data over the wires of telephone network. Originally the DSL stood for Digital Subscriber Loop, but in recent years, this acronym is abbreviated as Digital Subscriber Line, as this term is more market friendly. ADSL is the most recent version of the consumer ready digital subscriber line (DSL).

The download speed of the DSL cable Internet varies from 256 kbps to 24-mbps. It depends upon the DSL technology, service level, and line conditions implemented. The upload speed is typically lower than the download speed for ASDL and similar to the download speed for SDSL.

Some DSL cable Internet connections, like VDSL and ADSL, work by separating the different frequencies that are used in single telephone line in two bands. The ISP information data uses high frequency band, while voice uses lower band of frequency.

The users on phone generally install DSL filter. This wipes out higher frequencies and allows the phone to send and receive only the lower frequencies and hence creates two separate bands. In this way, the phone and DSL modem can use the same telephone line at the same time without being interfered by one another.

Connection procedures for DSL cable Internet

The connection procedure of the DSL cable Internet starts with physical connection. DSL modem has to be hooked to a telephone line on consumer side. The other line has been connected to DSLAM by the phone company and connects various DSL connections in single box. The DSLAM cannot be located far from the user. The reason is attenuation.

Electrical resistance can cause loss of data between DSL modem and DSLAM. Few residential areas can be connected to single DSLAM. The DSL modem passes through the sync procedure when it is powered up. This procedure can be commonly described as:

* A self-test is done by the modem

* Between the computer and the modem, the modem checks connection. In case of the residential DSL variations, this is generally a USB Port or Ethernet Port. But in rare model, fire wire port is being used. Some DSL variations use coeval serial connections.

* In the next procedure the modem attempts to synchronize the DSLAM. It is only when the modem and DSLAM are synchronized the data can appear. The synchronization process, though, is very complex but it is very quick. It involves an extensive test, which allows the two sides of connection to optimize performance as per the features of line in application.

This is the real procedure of starting the DSL Internet cable connection but the procedure varies from modem to modem.
