Conducting DSL Speed Test
More and more people are nowadays using Internet services for professional as well as personal uses. They are dependent on Internet for a number of things and thus constantly look for better Internet connection options that are hitting the market from time to time. For example, DSL is a technology newer to dial ups and it is much superior to them. The main factor that has made DSL technologies so famous in the market is their fast Internet access speed. Maximum Speeds Theoretically, a DSL speed test connection can exhibit a data rate ranging from 10 to 30 Mbps. But this is just a theoretical statement. In actual practice, it is not possible to attain such a speed due to many factors that lowers the speed rate. One of the major reasons that are responsible for speed reduction is that, a DSL network shares a common bandwidth with all the cable operators in a locality. So more the number of users, slower will be the speed. And then there are other reasons like congestion in the network, bandwidth restrictions laid down by the DSL service provider in the form of speed caps, all adds to reducing the speed. A the speeds start to reduce you might want to start thinking about a dsl upgrade package. The may involve changing providers or pay more for your service. But there are ways to test our DSL speed. There are basically two ways for DSL speed test: * A simple calculation test that we can handle manually without requiring the need of any kind of software or any type of service. * There are some service providers that allow us to test the DSL speed by running a program through their server. 1. The Manual DSL speed test: This speed test is dependent upon the downloading speed of Internet service and the Uploading speed of the Internet. Manual speed test is simply done by downloading any kind of software from the Internet and comparing its file size with the time taken to download it fully from the Internet. After the downloading is over, choose a file of specific size and upload it to check the time taken uploading it. For example if a file is of 2 Mb size and if it has taken 5 minutes as upload time, then the upload speed is evaluated as 2 Mb per 300 seconds or 6.82 kilo bits per second. 2. Service Based DSL speed test: Service based speed test is carried on a website that offers such a speed test facility. They have software installed on their server, which lets us to download and upload a file for testing purpose. The results for the speed test are displayed there and then on the web page. Visualware.com is a website that facilitates such a service. So, above two are the most effective DSL speed tests available. However, many people find service based DSL speed test a more convenient way of testing the DSL speed. |
