DSL Versus Cable Modem- A Comparative Analysis

DSL as well as the cable modem, both are the high-speed broadband Internet connections. But if a question is asked as to which one is the better connection - a DSL or cable modem, it is quite difficult to answer, as the answer is not quite definite.

Many factors come in the forefront that have to be considered while deciding upon which one of the two high speed connections to choose from. Any connection you choose, whether a DSL or a Cable, it would be faster and better than the most ancient dial-up modem connections. In case of any one of the two connections, your Internet experience is bound to be enjoyable. So, let us just study each of these connections in detail, to do a DSL versus cable modem comparison.

DSL

Like any other dial up connection, a digital subscriber line uses the existing copper wire telephone line in order to transfer the data at high speed. Following things are needed to qualify for the DSL connection:

* A telephone line

* A Digital subscriber line modem. It normally comes along with the service.

* A USB port or an Ethernet Card. Most of the DSL connections allow both the connections, but it is the Ethernet, which is always recommended.

* A phone company, which offers DSL services. For example, Verizon.

The distance between the office or home and the company's main office is one of the major factors that can influence the DSL connection. More you are away from the main office, weaker will be the signal and hence the connection will be slow. And hence, as compared to the cable modem the DSL is not available widespread.

Advantages of DSL:

1. As compared to cable, DSL is cheaper.

2. High speed is almost guaranteed in case of the DSL, because of the dedicated line.

3. While surfing, one can also talk on phone.

4. It is also possible to perfor a dsl upgrade to the software or as the technology advances, without having to replace your equipment.

Disadvantages of DSL:

1. Non-availability in all areas.

2. Speed can vary depending on the distance between the home and the main office.

Cable Modem

Cable modem does not depend on the distance between the central office and the home or office, unlike DSL. A cable modem is generally shared among neighbors. This is not available in case of the DSL services. Most of the cable companies offer pipelines that come with large bandwidth.

Advantages of cable modem:

1. The speed of the cable modem is faster than that of the DSL.

2. Unlike DSL, cable modem is more widespread

3. Speed is not affected because of the distance.

Disadvantages of cable modem:

1. Cable modem as compared to the DSL is more expensive.

2. Cable modem line is shared with the other users.

After this DSL versus Cable modem comparative study, one can decide which connection will suit according to the specific needs.
