Choosing Internet- Cable Or DSL?
|
Todays world is a world of competition. A technology, which is talk of the town today, can become outdated the next day. A new technology comes in to the market with a promise to offer more and overcome the disadvantages of the earlier technologies. Internet cable DSL is also a new superior broadband technology as compared to dial-ups and it offers much more advance features than the dial-ups. There are around 16 million subscribers of DSL and cable modem in United States. It is much faster to load web pages with these technologies. The speed with which these pages are loaded is almost three times the speed with which, they were loaded by dial ups. They are also faster for files downloading, streaming videos or sending or receiving big e-mails. Thus, it saves a lot of money, as one is able to surf more number of pages in an hour than previously and thus this ways pays less for more Internet access. Thus, these technologies are widely used in metro cities where the usage of Internet is in a great deal. DSL (digital subscriber line) is a technology, which uses the telephone wires for communicating between Internet and the computer system. DSL speed of access that is the speed by which data reaches form Internet to the computer or vice versa is higher than dial-ups but is slower than cable modem technology. The things required to form the connection are a telephone line, modem, Ethernet card and an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Cable Modem technology for Internet access uses the same coaxial cable that is used to receive cable television network provided by the cable operator. It requires a special type of modem and Ethernet card to make the connection. Cable modems are even faster than DSL. Theoretically, a cable modem access speed is around 30 Mbps while DSL offers 10 Mbps speed of access. There are some factors that judge, which of these two technologies are better than the other. But it is seen that one technology is better in one respect while the other technology might be better in some other respect. So, below are certain factors from which we can choose services of these two technologies. * Availability of the Service: It is seen that it is easier to get a Cable Modem connection than the DSL connection. So those who want to avail the service earlier, need to opt for the Cable Modem connection. * Cost: A cable modem connection plan cost around $40 to $45 for a month while DSL connection plan cost around $45 to $50 per month, while the installation charges for both are the same. So, it could be seen that cable modem is slightly cheaper than DSL. * Installation Procedure: It is easier to install a DSL service as compared to Cable service. * Performance Factor: Out of the two technologies, cable modems are faster than DSL. They are a better performer as compared to DSL. Thus, above factors are a means to judge which of these services is a better option for us and therefore gives us a fair chance to make a choice before buying Internet cable DSL. |
